What We Check
An MOT checks that your vehicle meets the legal minimum safety and environmental standards on the day of the test.
Lights
Headlights, rear lights, indicators, brake lights, number plate light and any fog lamps.
Tyres, wheels & TPMS

How long does an MOT take?
It takes approximately 45-60 minutes.
When is my MOT due?
You can check your MOT due date via the governments online MOT Checker.
Don’t forget, you can book your vehicle in up to 1 month before it’s due to give you plenty of time to have it repaired should it fail for any reason.
When should I drop my car off with you?
Just drop your car off on the day of the MOT around 10 minutes before your appointment and we’ll call you when it’s ready. It’s extremely important to be on time because we have a certain amount of MOT’s throughout the day. If you arrive late, we will have to start the next customer.
What happens if my car fails the MOT?
If your car fails, it will need to be repaired and retested. We recommend booking your MOT with enough time to have it repaired in the event of failure because you’ll be unable to drive it without a valid MOT certificate.
How much is the retest?
If you leave your vehicle with us and it is repaired within 10 days, the retest is free.
If you have your car repaired elsewhere and return to us within 10 days, we have to charge a partial retest fee.

Are there any checks I can do myself prior to the MOT?
There are various minor items you could check to ensure your car doesn’t fail on easy to fix items.

Will my car fail if there is a chip on my windscreen?
If the chip is 10mm within the drivers sight or 40mm of the swept area (the area of the wipers) then your car will fail automatically.
We recommend checking your windscreen and having any repairs done prior to your MOT.
Pre-MOT Checklist
There are several areas of your car you can check prior to bringing it in to be tested
Ready to book?Windscreen
Check your windscreen to ensure there are no chips or cracks larger than 10mm in the drivers field of vision and no bigger than 40mm elsewhere.
If there are any chips or cracks, these should be repaired prior to your MOT.
Wipers
Windscreen wipers should function and be in good condition. Any splits means they should be replaced.
Also check you have screen wash as this is also a failure.
Tyres
Tyres should be correctly inflated according to your vehicle handbook. If you don’t know the correct pressures for your vehicle, you can enter your vehicle registration or search by make/model here.
In addition each tyre should have a minimum of 1.6mm tread around the entire tyre. If you’re not sure how to do this, try the 20p test. This involves placing a 20p into the tyre (across the middle 3/4 of the tyre). If you can’t see the outer band of the coin, the tyres are above the legal limit.
You can also purchase a tyre depth gauge from a nearby retailer.
Exhaust
It’s worth getting any excessive noise, or rattling, leaks or smoke checked prior to your MOT as any of these signs can indicate a problem and the exhaust should be in good working order.
Lights
Check headlights, brakes, fog lights and indicators by sitting in the car and turning them on, one by one, and having somebody else walk around the vehicle.
Also ensure the vehicle registration is clean and in good condition.
Brakes
Be aware if your car pulls to one side as this can indicate a problem which will need to be resolved prior to an MOT.
It’s also worthwhile checking the thickness of your brake pads. Whilst the minimum by law (in the UK) is 1.5mm, it can vary between car manufacturers and it’s generally accepted that brake pads should be replaced when they reach 3mm.
Seat Belts
Check all seatbelts by pulling them hard to ensure they lock. They should lock into position.
Ensure your seatbelts are not frayed or cut in any way.
Mirrors
Check that your mirrors are in good condition and you’re able to adjust them
Fluid Levels
Top up all fluids (engine oil, windscreen, brakes).
Horn
It’s essential your horn works so give it a honk before coming in!
